Matlacha (MAT-la-shay) is a small community east of Pine Island in Matlacha Pass. Matlacha deemed its name from a Caloosa word meaning “water to the chin”. The city is .20 square miles and although it is not technically, many islanders will call it one of the 5 communities of Pine Island. In 2010, the total population was 677.
Matlacha used to be popular in commercial fishing of Mullets until a ban was put place in 1992. Since then, Matlacha is regarded as an artist’s community. It is considered an “old Florida” fishing village and houses many restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. Among the many places to visit on Matlacha, Bert’s Bar and Grill, Mulletville, and Sandy Hook Fish & Rib House can be found just to name a few. Jimmy Buffet has even been known to drop into a local bar and play unannounced. Residents and guests enjoy joining the many fishing tournaments held throughout the year that give to local charities as well as attending many of Pine Island events such as The Taste of Pine Island Festival, The Annual Mullet Toss, Calusa Heritage Day and Mango Mania.
