Marco Island lies in the Gulf of Mexico off of Naples in southwest Florida. Marco Island is 12.4 square miles with a population in 2010 of 16,413. With a tropical climate, Marco Island is the largest barrier island within southwest Florida’s ten thousand islands.
Marco Island, once known as “La Isla de San Marco”, traces back to 500 AD when the Calusa people inhabited southwest Florida. In 1896, many artifacts were discovered on Marco Island and can be found at the Smithsonian Institution on the island. In the late 1800’s development began with the first hotel known today as Olde Marco Inn.
Visiting the beaches, art galleries and restaurants on Marco Island are among the favorite things to do there.
