Fort Myers Beach is located in Lee County, Florida. It is 6.2 square miles with a population in 2010 of 6,277. The town is situated on the Barrier Island of Estero Island. It was incorporated as part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area in 1995.
The history of Fort Myers Beach spans back to over 2,000 year ago when the Calusa’s inhabited and constructed shell mounds along the bayside. They resisted Spanish colonization and the arrival of Ponce de Leon in 1513 and 1521. The Calusa met their demise almost 150 years later when disease, hostilities, political and economic upheaval fell upon them.
Today, many inhabit the island as part time and full time residents well as visitors come from all over to enjoy the beaches, restaurants and shops of Fort Myers Beach. The island has a large recreational center, Farmers Market, community pool and events for residents such as a Fourth of July celebration on the beach. With over 100 restaurants such as Fresh Catch Bistro, South Beach Grill and Pete’s Time Out, there are plenty of places to satisfy any palate. Music and night life on Fort Myers Beach is always booming any night of the week at places such as Top O’ Mast, The Lani Kai, and The Beached Whale.
